The drug is currently still being studied in clinical trial, but studies have shown that remdesivir can inhibit the coronaviruses that cause SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) and MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome).

Médecins Sans Frontières is calling for the drugs manufacturer, Gilead, to make the patents for remdesivir freely available if the drug is shown to be effective in treating Covid-19.
