Real Madrid A tough defender with tremendous character
Goyo Benito‘s death has touched a large part of the Real Madrid family.
The defender played for the club during a time when the squad wasn’t full of stars, but he became a legend in his own right.
Benito was never the most talented player with the ball at his feet, but his character and strength elevated him to the highest status amongst Real Madrid fans.
“Get out the axe, Benito,” the supporters used to sing in the stands.
Benito was respected by teammates and opponents alike for his attitude of never giving up, chasing every lost cause.
He was spoken about as a noble opponent, which is a far cry from the culture amongst the sport nowadays.
As well as his football, Benito became a social talisman for Real Madrid when he opened a restaurant that became a perfect refuge for the players. Even the Atletico Madrid players would eat there.
Florentino Perez always shared a close relationship with Benito, who was at his side for the 1995 presidential elections at Real Madrid.
In his final years, Florentino would often visit Benito at his residence and supported him through an illness that he had lived with for a decade.
