There’s been a lot of speculation as to which version of the legendary Undertaker we’ll be seeing on the Grandest Stage of Them All when he wrestles AJ Styles at WrestleMania 36.
As soon as ‘The Phenomenal One’ brought up ‘Taker’s wife Michelle McCool on Raw a few weeks back (and referred to him by his real name), much of the WWE Universe suggested that ‘The Phenom’ was destined to return to his divisive ‘American Badass’ persona for the first time in almost two decades. And when ‘Taker stormed down the ramp last week with his hair in a plait like it was 2001 all over again, it looked like that was indeed been the plan.
However, according to a new report from SportsKeeda’s Tom Colohue, that’s not the intended direction, after all. Speaking on the Dropkick DiSKussions podcast, he revealed we could be seeing a very different Undertaker at WrestleMania, commenting:
“… The Undertaker is leading into another run, shall we say. He has this particular way of doing things but he wants to have some longevity and maybe The Undertaker character isn’t right anymore. The American Badass is unlikely to return. It was much for the time. It was created to sort of keep him going for the attitude era. But It could be that the Deadman has simply run its course and so he has to now evolve and make something different.”
Now, on the latest episode of Raw, Styles claimed that he wanted The Undertaker of old, but according to Colohue, we won’t be seeing any of the classic iterations of ‘The Deadman’ at the Showcase of Immortals.
“It has been mentioned to me that we are going to see something different, something new we are not going to see a return to the old Undertaker. They want a clean slate, they want a refresher and everyone involved wants that as well… the kayfabe age is well and truly gone.”
It does seem like this feud between Styles and The Undertaker is intent on destroying the last remaining shreds of kayfabe that protected the latter’s character over the years, so a new gimmick is certainly a possibility. The question is: What kind of Undertaker would be at home in a ‘Bone Yard Match’, if not the original?
