Infectious Diseases professor Nigel McMillan says the coronavirus has reached a “significant next step” by jumping from human-to-human.
Professor McMillan said the virus would place a major strain on health services as it continued to “invade the country”.
“We realise this is going to be a significant burden on our health care system, and the planning is well in place to deal with that,” he said.
“We will keep racking it up as the virus slowly starts to invade the country.”
The Gold Coast Griffith University cancer and disease specialist said elderly patients would be most vulnerable to coronavirus.
“All those measures that we need to put in place are really around protecting those most vulnerable in our society,” he said.
